The Supreme Court on Monday, 7th October 2019 suspended the decision of an election tribunal that nullified Qasim Suri’s election as well as the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to de-notify him as a member of the National Assembly.
Admitting Suri’s appeal for hearing, a three-member of the apex court headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial issued notices to the parties in the case.
The top court also asked the election commission not to issue the election schedule for NA-265 (Quetta-II).
In his appeal, filed by Naeem Bukhari, Suri had questioned the jurisdiction of the ECP to unseat him when it was not constituted properly since the five-member commission was short of two members.
Election tribunal de-seats NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri. The Balochistan High Court’s election tribunal on 27 Sept 2019 declared the election of National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri as “null and void” and ordered re-election in NA-265 constituency,
PTI leader Suri was elected from the area in 2018. He was later elected to hold the position of the Deputy Speaker of National Assembly of Pakistan. The tribunal did not announce a date for the re-election. Suri, who has been de-seated following the tribunal’s verdict, remains eligible to contest the re-election.
